How seasonal are European hotels: how much of the year's business falls in summer, how many hotels close in winter, and how far do staff and prices swing?
In Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia and Greece about 40% of a year's hotel nights fall in July and August, against 25.5% in the EU. Spain had 550,715 hotel rooms open in January against 910,814 in August, only 133 of 1,381 Balearic hotels open in winter, and 62% of Greek hotels run seasonally, open 5.5–6.4 months a year.
Eurostat tour_occ_nim (36 countries, hotels NACE I55.1, 2025), INE Spain hotel occupancy survey (2025–2026), Ibestat, INE Portugal, Istat Annuario 2024 (2023 data), Emilia-Romagna Region tourism statistics (2023), ITEP annual hotel survey for the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (n=621, 2025) · verified as of
Share of a year's hotel nights spent in July and August, 2025 (%)
Nights spent in hotels in July plus August, divided by the year's total. If demand were spread evenly, two months would hold about 17% of nights (our calculation, 2/12). The Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean are the most summer-dependent; Benelux and Germany the least.

Months a Greek seasonal hotel is open, by category, 2025
Average months of operation among hotels that close part of the year. Higher-category hotels stay open almost a month longer, but even a 5-star seasonal hotel is closed for more than five months.
Italy: hotel bed-places used over the full year, counting closed months, 2023 (%)
Istat's gross utilisation divides nights by all bed-places for 365 days, so closed months count as empty. The Alpine provinces and Rome's region use their beds most; the southern coast and islands least. For contrast, Eurostat's net occupancy, which counts only open days, was 53.3% for Italian hotels in 2025.

Why seasonality numbers for the same country look so different
Three measures answer three different questions. First, the summer share of nights (Eurostat) is about demand: it says nothing about whether hotels close, which is why Spain's national 25.4% sits next to the Balearics, where only 6.18% of the August room stock is open in January. National averages blend year-round cities and islands with summer coasts; the province and island rows matter more than the country row. Second, occupancy is usually measured only over open establishments or open days. Algarve occupancy of 31.62% in January is the occupancy of what stayed open, and Eurostat's 53.3% net occupancy for Italy counts only open days, while Istat's 33.8% gross rate counts closed months as empty. Use the gross measure when you plan revenue per property per year. Third, sources count different stock: INE Spain counts hotels and hostals, Ibestat reports both establishments and bed-places, INE Portugal counts all tourist accommodation, and the Greek figures come from a hotel association survey of 621 hotels weighted to the 10,118 in the country, not from official statistics. Italian gross rates and the Rimini breakdown are 2023 data; most other rows are 2025–2026. Countries such as Croatia and Bulgaria have the most summer-dependent demand but do not publish winter closures in a comparable form.

Methodology
Every number on this page is a fact node in the God of Startups Atlas — a knowledge graph where each metric carries its source URL, reporting period, evidence tier and the verbatim quote it was taken from. Tier 1 means official statistics (Eurostat, INE Spain, Ibestat, ISTAC, INE Portugal, Istat, the Emilia-Romagna Region); tier 2 means industry research with a disclosed method (the ITEP survey for the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels). Ratios such as August-to-January staff and RevPAR are published as fact nodes computed from the source's monthly series; the few comparisons marked 'our calculation' are simple divisions of two figures shown on this page. Values are shown in the units the source reports; nothing is converted, estimated or modelled.
